“A woman, as long as she lives, will remember how she was made to feel at her birth.”

– Anna Verwaal

What is the role of a Midwife?

Midwives can provide ongoing support during pregnancy, labour, and birth, and after care for the mother and baby following the birth for those experiencing a normal (low risk) pregnancy. BYS midwifery practices to the ACM National Midwifery Guidelines for Consultation and Referral. Various medical conditions identified during pregnancy may necessitate a consultation with or referral to a General Practice/Obstetrician(GP/Obs).

How much does Continuity of Midwifery care cost?

Continuity of midwifery care with BYS Midwifery costs $7000. This fee includes the cost of a second midwife attending your home for the birth of your baby.  This fee is payable by 36 weeks gestation and includes the loan of a TENS machine, birth pool and library books.  A Medicare receipt is provided at the conclusion of your care.

Do I need a referral?

No, BYS Midwifery always welcomes direct inquiries with open arms.

Where do I give birth?

BYS Midwifery will assist you to give birth in your own home.

Do you work with Doulas?

Yes, we work with and advocate the employment of a doula.

Can I ask for pain relief?

A mindset of working with pain is important in facilitating physiological labour and birth, this is especially true in the home environment. BYS Midwifery recommends aromatherapy, massage, immersion in warm water, application of heat packs, active birth positions and sterile water injections for pain relief.

What happens if something arises during my home birth?

Should a problem arise whilst giving birth at home – a calm and orderly transfer will be organised. In the case of an emergency, an ambulance will be called and you will be transferred to the local hospital. BYS Midwifery is appropriately trained and has experience in identifying potential problems and managing emergencies.
